Baklava is a Turkish rich, sweet dessert pastry made of layers of filo filled with chopped nuts and sweetened and held together with syrup or frosting or honey.

Ingredients:

Syrup
1 cup sugar
¾ cup water
½ lemon juice

Filling
½ Cup walnuts
½ Cup pistachio
½ Cup cashew
3 Tbsp sugar
2 Tsp ground cinnamon

Assembly
5 - 6 Filo sheets
1 Cup butter melted

Method

Filling:
In a food processor, combine the walnuts, pistachio and cashew, sugar, and cinnamon. Process until very finely ground.

Syrup:
In a small pot over medium high heat, combine the sugar, water and lemon juice bring to a boil
Simmer until reduced to a syrupy consistency, 5-7 minutes
Remove from the heat and let cool.

Assemble the Baklava:

  • On a flat surface, lay out a filo sheet. Brush it with melted butter
  • Leaving some space from the bottom spoon some filling along the bottom edge of the filo sheet. Then roll up as tightly as you can. Transfer it to a baking tray and repeat with the remaining ingredients
  • Brush the tops of the rolls with butter and cut rolls diagonally with knife
  • Preheat the oven to 180?C
  • Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown
  • Immediately after removing from the oven, brush the Baklava with the syrup.
